A Coastal Getaway: Mystic, CT & Block Island, RI

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and let me just say—life has been busy. Between working full-time and being deeply involved in ministry (my husband Andrew and I are currently helping build up a brand new worship team at our church), finding time to pause and reflect has felt rare. So when I had Juneteenth off, we decided to both take Friday, June 20th off as well and do a much-needed little getaway. And wow—this one was so good for the soul.

We booked an Airbnb in Groton, CT, which ended up being the perfect location. It was a short 10-15 minute drive to both Mystic, CT and New London—ideal since New London is where you board the ferry to get to Block Island, RI. On our first day, we explored downtown Mystic. The shops were full of charm, and we couldn’t pass up the chance to grab a slice at the famous Mystic Pizza (yes, that Mystic Pizza from the movie!). Afterward, we checked into our Airbnb around 1 PM to rest a bit, had dinner, strolled through Old Mystic Village, and caught a showing of the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

Friday, we woke up early, grabbed a quick breakfast, and made a Walmart stop before heading to New London to catch our ferry to Block Island. Let me just say—Block Island was incredible. After so much rain lately, we were so grateful for the sunshine and perfect weather. We rented a moped (highly recommend!) and explored the island from top to bottom. We visited the lighthouse, Mohegan Bluffs (breathtaking—truly felt like we were in Hawaii or California), and even spotted seals and nesting seagulls. For lunch, we ate at The Beach Head where we both devoured delicious lobster rolls, followed by a little shopping and ice cream before catching the 4:55 PM ferry back.

One quick tip: if you plan to take the ferry, get there early. We took our time and had to scramble a bit after realizing the main lot was full—but thankfully there’s a parking garage across the street. Also, bring snacks, water, sunscreen, and a jacket for the ferry (the ocean winds were no joke!). Renting a bike, car, or moped is so worth it—our full-day moped rental came to about $135 with tax, but it gave us the freedom to see everything without feeling rushed.

Back in Groton, we grabbed a bite at Chipotle, showered, and were in bed by a little after 8 PM—happy, sun-kissed, and totally refreshed.

If you’ve never explored New England, add Mystic and Block Island to your list. Mystic might just be our favorite spot in all of CT, and Block Island? Absolutely magical. Next time, we’re planning to vlog the whole experience!

Here’s to more little adventures, intentional rest, and sticking with the blog a little more consistently ✨

Until next time,
—Roxanne
